Nokia wants to turn police vans and fire engines into command and control centers to help emergency responders.

The idea is for fire engines to have their own personal 4G network with a 50km radius.

From the command centre, fire fighters would launch drones and use their cameras to survey the scene. The same concept is being used for search and rescue, with artificial intelligence linking the drones together into a “swarm”, so only one pilot is needed to direct a whole group of drones.

DJI Tips on Flying Your Drone from a Boat. Well and thoroughly done.

Drone photographs captured over water are filled with drama and never-before-seen views of the planet around us. We see marine life, shoreline, and the spectacle of contrasting elements.  Flying a drone from a boat is especially challenging and requires a great deal of care and pre-consideration, if you don’t want to say goodbye to your DJI investment.

We have flown from boats and kayaks since the Phantom 1, in early 2013, and we endured several scares and close calls. We learned from our mistakes and we want to teach others so that they also learn from our mishaps. Here, at DJI Aerial Photo Academy, we compiled a list of pointers that will help you mitigate your risks while flying from a boat. Not all of these tips will apply to every flight or every type of boat. It is best to at least read these and grasp the reasons behind each tip, in case you find yourself in a wet situation where your drone begins to act oddly.

Sheep Adapt Readily to Regular Drone Monitoring, Says Virginia Tech Study.

Researchers flew a drone at varying heights above a flock of sheep, recording their reactions and behavior. The results point to little interference.

Researchers at Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been studying the effects of drones on a variety of agricultural implementation, such as microbe analysis, and indeed, how drones affect the behavior of actual livestock such as sheep. According to Farmer’s Weekly, the evidence gathered seems to support the notion that sheep are largely undeterred from their regular patterns of behavior by nearby drones. Though some individual sheep may be put off at first by the unexpected presence of a whirring, aerial shepherd, adaptation occurs quickly and standard behavior resumes.

New ‘Drone Prix’ App Built from DJI Software Development Kit

Edgybees, an Augmented Reality (AR) technology company, has launched a new AR mobile application that is compatible with DJI drones.

Developed using DJI’s software development kit (SDK), the “Drone Prix” is the first-ever AR mobile app created specifically for DJI’s aerial platforms, according to the companies, which add that the goal is to help new drone pilots master their skills in a “fun, safe and immersive way.”

During the game, users fly a drone through a virtual obstacle course and collect prizes. They can compete for the best performance, points and time for a place in the high-score leaderboard with other drone pilots around the world.

The Difference Between 3D Modeling and 3D Mapping Explained

If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between 3D modeling and 3D mapping, you’re not alone.  There is some overlap between the two in technology and solutions.  We asked the experts at Pix4D to explain the difference.

Pix4D is one of the leading providers of photogrammetry solutions for drones, creating both 2D and 3D information from images.  Dr. Christoph Strecha, Pix4D’s founder and CEO, says that the difference is in how the data is used.  “There is no difference scientifically,” explains Strecha.  “A map is really 2D, something flat – but with modeling, the result is not a 2D map but a triangulated model where you can also see facades.”
