The Drone Racing League Announces 2018 Allianz World Championship

The Drone Racing League (DRL), the world’s premier drone racing circuit, and The General Sport Authority (GSA) of Saudi Arabia announced the details of the 2018 DRL Allianz World Championship. The Championship race is set to take place September 2018 in Saudi Arabia and will be the first professional drone race staged in the kingdom.

Marking the 7th and final event of the 2018 DRL Season, the Allianz World Championship will push the eight most elite FPV pilots on the planet to race custom-built DRL drones in excess of 90 miles per hour through a complex,3D  racecourses, fighting to be crowned the World’s Greatest Drone Pilot. The final race will be broadcast in 87 countries on channels including, ESPN, OSN, Sky Sports, ProSiebenSat.1, FOX Sports Asia, and Disney XD.

Race this drone across the Pacific?

A Japanese drone start-up is throwing out a challenge to all comers for a drone race from Tokyo to San Francisco. It sounds far-fetched, but a lot indicates that the race could happen much sooner than you think. Even if drones taking part will need AI, flight-control software, sensors and batteries that hardly exist today.

“We generally get two reactions when talking about the race. Mostly people think we’re crazy, but within the drone industry they generally think that if we can find solutions to the central issues, then it’s definitely doable,” Yoshiyasu Ando, CEO of iRobotics, says.
