The beach was officially unpatrolled at 8am, but lifeguards had gathered there for an early morning training session, Port News reports.
A surfer had already reached the swimmers, keeping their heads above water as lifeguards rushed to help.
“I swam out, wrapped a rescue tube around one of them who was grabbing onto the man’s surfboard,” lifeguard Angus Knox said.
“Once the rescue board arrived we were able to paddle the two back around to the beach, into the wave zone and onto the sand bank.”
The video of the rescue shows just how quickly people can be dragged in a rip.
